If you are losing kitchen-line exchanges because you arrive late, take hand speed. If your drives get pushed back on contact, take plow through. Note that adding lead tape moves a fast paddle toward plow, but you cannot go the other direction.

- Lower is faster. Swing weight is the single best predictor of hand speed at the kitchen line — more so than static weight, which mostly affects arm fatigue.
- Is a heavier paddle better for drives?
- Up to a point. More mass behind the ball means less deflection on contact and more depth on drives, but it also slows your reset and counter speed. The right answer depends on whether you win more points from the baseline or the kitchen.
